An Austrian 84-year-old man with far-right connections has been released after nine months in prison in Afghanistan.
The man traveled to Afghanistan last May to prove that the country was safe to visit, including by writing an article titled “Holiday with the Taliban” that was published in a far-right newspaper. The reason is said to be that he wanted to prove that the country is safe enough to send Afghan refugees back to, according to the Austrian newspaper Der Standard.
He was arrested shortly afterwards on suspicion of espionage.
– I think it was bad luck, but I want to visit the country again, the man said after being released.
Now the man will receive medical attention in Qatar before being flown back to Austria.
