Athletics: Kajsa Bergqvist on the luxury problem in shot put: “The most difficult selection”

Axelina Johansson has supported 18.44, Sara Lennman 18.29 and Fanny Roos 18.28 indoors this season. Lennman can stay at home as a reserve, ready to jump in if Johansson or Roos are prevented.

How far was Sara Lennman, actually Sweden’s second best shot putter, from being selected?

– Maybe it was mainly between Fanny and Sara, the year’s best is separated by a centimeter. It is very even if you only look at the indoor season. What decided in Fanny’s favor was her highest level with hits over 19 meters very many times, Bergqvist motivates and highlights Roo’s capacity at championships: Bronze at the indoor EC last year and a fourth place at the latest indoor WC in 2022.

“Three world-class shot putters”

It was at this selection that Bergqvist had to ponder the most.

– We have a luxury problem with an incredible top width with three shot putters in the top world elite for an indoor championship where we can only register two. Then it will be tough in my situation.

Sweden’s number one Axelina Johansson is studying in the USA and has competed there during the winter.

– She has competed sparingly, but we know her capacity. She has a rising form curve, is one of the world’s best shot putters, and is super fit for Glasgow, says Bergqvist about Johansson, who had large parts of the outdoor season ruined last year by a torn thigh muscle in connection with training.
