In the southern part of Thailand, at least nine people have died in floods caused by heavy rains. More than 13,000 people have had to leave their homes.

This was reported by the Thai authorities on Saturday.

A rescue operation is underway in the area. The authorities are using boats and jet skis to get people trapped by the water to safety. Temporary accommodation facilities have been established in schools and temples.

According to the Meteorological Institute of Thailand, heavy rains may continue for the next week in the southern parts of the country.

In the northern part of neighboring Malaysia, at least four people have died in floods and 80,000 people have been evacuated.
