At least 27 killed in fighting in Sudan

“An initial count following Saturday’s deplorable events shows that 27 people have been killed,” it said in a statement.

The organization points out that there are probably many more killed that have not yet been registered.

Heavy fighting between the country’s two rival military powers erupted on Saturday morning after months of heightened tensions. The violence escalated during the day.

In 2021, an RSF-backed military coup was carried out in the country. The parties have since cooperated with the intention that the RSF would be integrated into the regular army.

After Saturday’s battles, the army is now instead demanding that the RSF be disbanded, fueling fears of a new civil war.
