Fans have been hoping for 36 years, but Arnold Schwarzenegger remains merciless. Since Predator came out in 1987, the action hero hasn’t returned to the long-running sci-fi franchise. As the star revealed, in 2018 Predator – Upgrade would have offered an opportunity to which, however, didn’t suit him.
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s sci-fi return was too small
Speaking to Yahoo in 2017, Schwarzenegger explained:
[Die Produzenten] asked me, I I read the script and I didn’t like it. So I won’t be in it unless they rewrite the script or make the role bigger.
As our colleagues at Allocine report, Schwarzenegger had already been discussed as an actor for Predator 2 years before, but in the end he didn’t appear either. In the case of Predator – Upgrade, his unwillingness saved him from a flop. According to Box Office Mojo, the film only grossed $160 million at the box office. This is the second best result in the series, but with a production budget of 88 million dollars, a Predator part has never been more expensive. The fans’ reactions are even more significant: on Moviepilot, the film received an average rating of 5.2.

The Predator series revolves around an alien killing machine of the same name, which met the mercenary Dutch (Schwarzenegger) in its first screen appearance in 1987. After the failure of Predator – Upgrade, the celebrated Prey continued the franchise in 2022. Part 2 is under discussion and could give the sci-fi series a breath of fresh air. Maybe Schwarzenegger will be there too.
