Argentina wants the army to intervene in cases of terrorism

In Argentina, three days before the 48th anniversary of the military coup of March 24, 1976, the government of Javier Milei announced a bill intended to empower the armed forces to carry out security operations inside the country. If the measure should make it possible to fight against drug trafficking, ministers have drawn a parallel between this crime which is plaguing the country and the far left, in a speech close to that of the dictatorship. This while the president’s denialism with regard to the crimes of the military is upsetting many Argentines.

A week after news outbreak of violence linked to drug trafficking in the city of Rosario, the Ministers of Defense and Security announced a bill aimed at fighting organized crime:

The President of the Nation asked us to modify the internal security law so that the armed forces can intervene and carry out internal security operations in the very specific case of terrorism. »

In Argentina, the fight against “ terrorism » served as justification to the military dictatorship which caused 30,000 victims between 1976 and 1983. Asked at a press conference about the appropriateness of the measures announced, taking into account this historical precedent, the Minister of Defense denounced a relentlessness against the armed forces.

Our armed forces have been demonized, they have been exhausted because of ideological bias. They were persecuted, and ultimately, they were not used as they should be. »

This announcement comes one day after the Minister of Defense appeared with relatives of soldiers convicted of crimes against humanity during the dictatorship and drew a parallel between the current fight against drug trafficking and that against ” terrorism » far left in the 1970s.
