Are Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone Really Singing

LA LA LAND FILM. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone fall in love in the musical La La Land. But is it really the two actors who sing in Damien Chazelle’s Oscar-winning film?

[Mis à jour le 13 décembre 2021 à 20h45] Genre sometimes underestimated in the current production whereas it dominated as master in early Hollywood, the musical comedy was given a facelift with the release of La La Land in 2017. By making many nods to the classics of the genre (The umbrellas of Cherbourg, Singing in the rain, Beau fixes in New York …), Damien Chazelle reinvented it to bring it up to date. Of course, the two main performers of the film, Ryan gosling and Emma Stone, had to give of themselves. It is indeed the voice of the two actors that we hear in La La Land.

To prepare for the film, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling have taken numerous singing and dancing lessons. Most of La La Land’s songs are pre-recorded in the studio, with the exception of three scenes: Someone in the Crowd (Emma Stone’s solo), the City of Stars duo and the song Audition. Ryan Gosling did not know how to play the piano when he was chosen for the role, and had to train for three months before the start of filming. While a hand double is initially considered, Ryan Gosling has worked so hard that he too plays all the scenes where we see him on the piano. To be comfortable on the dance stages, the two actors rehearsed the choreographies for three to four months. A long and difficult job that paid off on screen, since La La Land won six Oscars: Best Director, Best Actress (Emma Stone), Best Cinematography, Best Original Music, Best Original Song and Best Sets.

Synopsis – In Los Angeles, Mia, an aspiring actress, is tired of going through auditions, without success. Sébastian, a jazz pianist, is fired from the seedy club where he plays because his playing is not accessible enough to passing tourists. The two young people meet in a traffic jam, get off to a bad start before discovering their many common points. They fall in love with each other. Sebastian wants to start his own club to finally play the music he loves and encourage Mia in his projects. He is engaged in a group whose style is the opposite of his, is absent too often and moves away from his dream. What worries Mia …
