Arcom is stepping up its fight against piracy. Following a decision by the Paris court, French Internet service providers (ISPs) will block more than 50 illegal streaming sites. Others may follow…

The least we can say is that we are not unemployed at theArcom ! The Audiovisual and Digital Communication Regulatory Authority, which took over from the Hadopi (High Authority for the dissemination of works and the protection of rights on the Internet) and the CSA (High Audiovisual Council) since beginning of 2022, seems determined to put an end to the piracy of works and content protected by copyright or broadcasting rights. And after attacking IPTV a few weeks ago, this perfectly illegal practice which mainly concerns the broadcasting of sports matches – in particular football – with radical measures (see our article), the organization takes on pirate streaming sites, which allow you to watch films and series broadcast by legal platforms without paying.

Illegal streaming: 18 months to block pirate sites

According the informed, following steps taken by Arcom and a decision by the Paris Court of Justice, the main French Internet service providers (Bouygues Telecom, Free, Orange and SFR) will have to block access to some fifty sites illegally offering video streaming, as well as some associated platforms – mainly hosting services. Here is the list of offending sites:

An impressive list, which lists more or less well-known sites and services that still attract some 2.8 million unique visitors per month, according to Association for the fight against audiovisual piracy (ALPA) which regularly establishes reports edifying on these practices.

However, the blocking will not be immediate, the Paris court granting ISPs a period of 18 months to block the offending sites and services. A period long enough to give the administrators of these sulphurous platforms time to change URLs, domains, or even names. Moreover, one can imagine that this measure will consist, as is often the case, in banning sites from the ISPs’ DNS. A method that is easy for regulars to circumvent, either by changing the DNS server (see our article), or by using a VPN, two simple and perfectly legal techniques. The continuation to the next episode, cat it is very likely that the list will grow soon, with a banishment from direct download sites (see our article)!
