Anne Hidalgos husband parachuted into the European Parliament

Anne Hidalgo’s husband appears in 7th position on the PS/Place publique list led by Raphaël Glucksmann in the next European elections.

This Wednesday, March 13, 2024, the head of the list for the next European elections, Raphaël Glucksmann (Socialist Party, Place publique), published his complete list of 81 names. “I am proud to lead this list. We will fervently carry the project of a powerful and just, ecological and social Europe. Does the eternal remake of the Macron – Le Pen duel make you suffocate? We are the alternative, serious and enthusiastic !” he said to X.

If this list was validated “almost unanimously” by the PS according to its statements, one name in particular attracts attention. That of Jean-Marc Germain, former French deputy for the 12th constituency of Hauts-de-Seine from the Socialists and Related group. Regional councilor of Ile-de-France since 2021, he is none other than the husband of the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo (PS) and appears in 7th position on Raphaël Glucksmann’s list.

11.5% of voting intentions for the PS list led by Raphaël Glucksmann

The third wave of the electoral survey carried out by Ipsos, in partnership with the Sciences-Po Political Research Center (Cevipov), the Montaigne Institute, the Jean-Jaurès Foundation and Le Monde has spoken. If the National Rally list led by Jordan Bardella continues to widen the gap (31% voting intentions), the gap tends to narrow behind. 18% of respondents said that their choice would fall on Valérie Hayer, the head of the list of the presidential majority for the election on June 9. Behind the two main forces of these 2024 Europeans, the battle is likely to rage, and third place could be played out in a pinch.

The list (PS/Place publique) led by Raphaël Glucksmann is credited with 11.5% of voting intentions. Marie Toussaint (Les Écologues) with 8.5%, François-Xavier Bellamy (Les Républicains) and Manon Aubry (La France Insoumise) with 7% follow. The Socialist list therefore progresses by one percentage point compared to the previous survey. Enough to give some momentum to a political party that has been in decline since the last presidential election. In this context, Jean-Marc Germain could hope to obtain a seat in the European Parliament.

Jean-Marc Germain in the race for a seat in the European Parliament

As a reminder, European deputies are elected according to the rules of proportional representation, by voting from the list with the highest average. Mixing is prohibited. In France, lists having obtained at least 5% of the votes benefit from a number of seats proportional to their number of votes. Seats are allocated to candidates according to the order of presentation on each list. This is why the Jean-Marc Germain track takes on its full meaning, despite the time that still separates us from the election and potential changes in voting intentions.

Checked in 7th position on the list of the Socialist Party and Place publique, the husband of the Paris city councilor is in a favorable position to join one of the 7 political groups of the European Parliament. With 11.5% voting intentions, the Socialist list could therefore allow it, in the future, to debate, amend and vote on the legal texts proposed by the European Commission. As things currently stand, around ten members of the PS could be elected, those positioned from 1 to 10 on Raphaël Glucksmann’s list. As a result, it is impossible to ensure that he obtains a seat. The gap is still too small between its place in the PS/Place publique list and the voting intentions of supporters which emerge from the latest projections.

In total, 81 deputies will be elected for France. France is the second largest demographic power behind Germany (96 MEPs). From now on, the answer will be in less than three months to know the result of the 2024 European elections and whether Jean-Marc Germain will be parachuted into the European Parliament. For now, the Socialists remain “united and determined, aware of the moment of historic change” that they are going through. “We will fight without pause or respite. We will go everywhere and we will not give up,” says his head of the list on X.
