Unlock the cars full range for payment

The car giant turns: Rebuilds electric cars for gasoline operation Tesla Model Y is the world’s best-selling electric car, and the cheapest version with rear-wheel drive and a smaller battery has a range of 455 kilometers.

However, it turns out that the car is actually capable of a significantly longer range than that, which Elon Musk has revealed in a post on X.

Now Musk wants to charge to unlock more range in cars that are already sold.

Tesla hides almost 10 miles of range

It’s not a little range that is hidden in Tesla’s most popular model, but through a purchase of between 1,500 and 2,000 dollars, customers should be able to unlock between 40 and 60 miles of range.

In Swedish terms, this corresponds to between 16,000 and 22,000 kroner to unlock between 64 and 96 kilometers of extra range. This can be put in relation to the basic price of the model, which in Sweden is SEK 544,170.

According to Elon Musk, how much range can be unlocked depends on the battery chemistry that the specific car is equipped with. Theoretically, the range of a Tesla Model Y RWD can go from around 45.5 to around 55 miles.

Waiting for approval

Even if you have the ambition to start offering your customers to unlock more range, this is not something that Tesla can currently offer.

According to Elon Musk, the problem is that the invention must be approved by the authorities in the markets where the car has been sold.

This probably has to do with which specification the model is type-approved with.

How customers view having to pay extra to get access to the entire car they have already bought remains to be seen.
