Relatives of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was killed during an Israeli raid on the West Bank in May, accuse the United States of trying to absolve Israel of responsibility for her death.
Earlier this week, the US State Department stated that their analysis of the bullet that killed Al Jazeera’s longtime reporter showed that it was “probably” fired from the Israeli side, but with no intention of killing.
In a letter, the family expresses sadness and outrage over the US response to the journalist’s death. Abu Akleh’s family is urging US President Joe Biden to meet with them when he visits Israel and the West Bank next week.
“Your government’s actions show a clear intention to undermine our efforts to achieve justice and accountability,” the family wrote in the letter.
The White House has declined to comment on the letter or request for a meeting.
