A chicken as a pet is popular. Fresh eggs, contented croaking, conviviality. But if there turns out to be a rooster, alarm bells often go off. Who wants to wake up to late night crowing or an argument with the neighbors? And they don’t lay eggs either. Roosters are therefore increasingly dumped, killed or left to wait for a new home on Marktplaats until St. Jutte Mass. The rooster is the goat. The black sheep. And that has to stop, animal organizations say. “Look before you leap.”
