An unidentified person threw an explosive device into a crowd at the Red Cross Doi Loyfa festival in northern Tak province.

The attack took place on Friday shortly before midnight local time.

The police arrested two people. No charges have been brought so far, the news agency AP says.

According to Thai police, at least 48 people were injured in the attack. Six of the injured are in critical condition.

The authorities of the Umphang area said in a press release on Saturday that the explosive was thrown near the performance stage. During the attack, several people were dancing in front of the stage.

Prime Minister of Thailand Paetongtarn Shinawatra offered his condolences to the families of those killed and injured in the attacks in X.

He said that he ordered the police and security authorities to find out the cause of the explosion. The Prime Minister also says that he has instructed the authorities to increase the number of police officers at all festivals.

Umphang is the southernmost district of North Tak province, located on the Myanmar border.
