An awkward Bruce Willis clone of Dwayne Johnson that’s only tolerable for the first few minutes

An awkward Bruce Willis clone of Dwayne Johnson thats only
Die Hard stands and falls with Bruce Willis. His lively, hard-boiled and at the same time vulnerable-normal hero figure simply holds the film together. But some producers just see a lot of action in the skyscraper. And this is how clones like Skyscraper with Dwayne Johnson come about, that’s on TV today. Bruce Willis clone starring Dwayne Johnson starts well and quickly loses momentum

The parallels to Willis’ McClane story are obvious in Skyscraper. Johnson plays Sawyer, a security technician, and his family stuck in a skyscraper with a bunch of mean terrorists. The ex-elite fighter intervenes immediately.

The Skyscraper poster is a tongue-in-cheek Die Hard copy

The film makes no secret of its role model, which is already evident in the funny poster. The beginning of the film is also entertaining. Johnson fits perfectly into the role’s dad/huff duality. secondary characters also get nice, somewhat more complex moments and the action is staged efficiently.

But the good first impression evaporates quickly. Once the premise of the film is clear, everything goes according to plan. Interesting character moments are passé, even charmer Johnson can’t save the run-of-the-mill plot. Bruce Willis would probably just have shrugged. Skyscraper isn’t hair-raisingly bad, but it just doesn’t matter a bit in the end.
