The government is negotiating deeper defense cooperation with the United States. It should make it easier for American forces to operate in Sweden.
– This could mean faster American military support in the event of a crisis and war, says Defense Minister Pål Jonson (M) about Sweden recently starting negotiations on an agreement, a so-called Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA).
“Base Areas”
According to Jonson, it can, for example, create conditions for establishing “base areas” for American forces in Sweden. That, in turn, may mean investments in certain infrastructure to store US military equipment and to house US soldiers.
Welcome defense agreement
NATO’s Supreme Commander in Europe (SACEUR) Christopher G Cavoli participated as a speaker at the national conference People and Defense in Sälen. He welcomes a defense agreement with Sweden:
– It will greatly benefit both countries.
