Alpine skiing: Anja Pärson gave up on a competition: “Happened when I was mentally exhausted”

Shiffrin crashed badly two weeks ago and is yet to recover from the knee injury. In connection with boyfriend Aleksander Aamodt Kilde’s crash, the tough competition program came into focus.

“I absolutely agree with those who think we need to take a look at the demands placed on the top athletes both from a calendar perspective and the schedule of evening programs,” writes Shiffrin on X.

Lost five to seven kilos in one season

Pärson talks about his experiences.

– The mental strength that you have to do to be up there and fight for the victory all the time is enormous. It is running around the clock, says Pärson to Radiosporten and says that she did not get enough nutrition and could lose five to seven kilograms of weight during a season because she did not have time to eat properly.

Pärson, who ended her career in 2012, talks about the one time she couldn’t bear to give it her all, but deliberately took it down slowly after giving up.

– It happened once in my career when I was sort of mentally exhausted. I had nothing more to give, and it was a double race in a solid, lovely place with a big crowd and everything. But mentally I simply couldn’t perform, says Pärson.
