Alcaraz on – with a smile

6–2, 6–3, 4–6, 6–3 were the winning numbers in the end in a match that took just over three hours.

— It is a difficult opponent. It was a good match with many good duels and delicious strikes, says Alcaraz in the stadium interview in the Discovery+ broadcast.

Both players pursed their lips and smiled after some of the match’s hottest duels.

— We played good duels that made me smile and the same for Daniel. We play to entertain people and make them happy, says Alcaraz about the meeting with the 26-seeded Evans.

The 20-year-old world number one won the US Open last year and is aiming to become the first since Roger Federer in 2008 to defend his US Open men’s singles title.

— It’s clear that I look at the draw and see who I can face, but the focus is on one day at a time. But it is of course my goal to defend my title and do like Federer, says Alcaraz.

In the fourth round awaits the 61-ranked Italian Matteo Arnaldi.

In the women’s singles, second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus advanced by outclassing Clara Burel of France 6–1, 6–1.

Waiting for Sabalenka is Daria Kasatkina, Russia, ranked 14 in the world.
