Aid workers detained in Afghanistan

18 people from a Swiss aid organization have been detained in Afghanistan.

The International Assistance Mission (IAM) states that on two occasions their personnel were taken from the office in the province of Ghor in central Afghanistan and taken to Kabul.

“At the moment, we have no information about the allegations against our staff and therefore cannot comment or speculate about the situation,” the organization writes on its website.

According to local media, the staff were detained for preaching about Christianity. One of them is said to be an American citizen.

IAM is a Christian organization, but emphasizes that it values and respects Afghan culture and traditions and that it provides help and support regardless of religious or political beliefs.
