The big winner of the elections in Nieuwegein is GroenLinks. That party won 6 seats, a doubling. “We are very happy and had absolutely not expected this,” said party leader Alma Feenstra. “The results show that Nieuwegeiners are going for an ambitious climate policy, social equality and healthy living.” GroenLinks may take the lead in the negotiations.

The second party is the VVD, also with 6 seats, followed by the PvdA and the United Senior Party (both 4 seats). Local Renewal, D66 and the CDA all won 3 seats; the ChristenUnie, the new party De Unie, everyone’s Interest and City Party NÚwegein 1. With 0.7 percent of the votes, Jesus Lives is not in the city council. The Nieuwegeinse SP did not participate in the elections.
