A teenage girl died after being attacked by a shark

Experts say it is highly unusual for sharks to be found in the part of the river where the girl was.

A 16-year-old girl who fell victim to a shark attack died on Saturday in Western Australia, authorities said. The girl had been jet skiing with friends on the Swan River near the city of Perth when the attack happened.

– Possibly there was a group of dolphins nearby and the girl jumped into the river to swim with them, said Fremantle District Police Inspector Paul Robinson.

Experts say it is highly unusual for sharks to be found in the part of the river where the girl was.

The authorities could not immediately say what kind of shark attacked the girl. However, the authorities urged people to be careful when moving on the river while considering whether some beaches should be closed.

A hundred years have passed since the last fatal shark attack in Swanjoki. In January 1923, a then 13-year-old boy was killed in the river at Claremont near Perth.
