A moderate reduction in beef production in prosperous countries would bring major global climate benefits, according to a recent study. The matter was investigated by researchers from Aalto University and New York University.

Even a reasonable reduction in beef production in countries with a higher income level would reduce the amount of pasture land needed for cattle breeding sufficiently in terms of climate effects. The necessary reduction would be a good tenth of the beef production in pasture lands.

According to the results obtained now, the regrowth of forests on pasture lands that were previously forests would help to achieve significant climate benefits. The benefits would be obtained without the need for major changes in the global food system.
