The phenomenon ‘rijpot’ dates from that time. Groups of Utrecht residents planned a joint outing through the pub or an association and they set aside a weekly amount for this. “And once a year they took the bus for a day to the forest, to the beach, or to an attraction outside the city,” says Jansen. “They brought drinks and food. And there was always an accordionist there for the music, so it was a very pleasant day. When they returned, the entire neighborhood welcomed them in a festive manner.”
