Stephen Syms said his mother fell on Sunday evening, while the ambulance arrived on Tuesday afternoon. She was then taken by ambulance to the Royal Cornwall Hospital, where the old woman was kept in the ambulance for 20 hours as well.

The incident came after an ambulance foundation warned that lives could be in danger due to delays in patient delivery.

It was also reported that a makeshift bunker was built around an 87-year-old man who fell again while waiting for an ambulance for 15 hours.

“WE HAD SAD FROM THE EVENT”

South West Ambulance Services said it was “saddened by the incident”.

“SYSTEM COMPLETELY CRASHED”

“It was very sad to see a 90-year-old woman like that, to wait and not know if she broke something. The system completely collapsed,” Syms told the BBC.

Syms said that when they called for an ambulance, they could get a response in nine minutes.

A spokesperson for the ambulance services said, “We regret that we were not able to provide the treatment he needed in a timely manner. Our ambulance staff are working hard to provide the best service to our patients. Health services are under great pressure.”
