The mummy is believed to have belonged to the Manchay civilization. It developed in the central parts of the Peruvian coast between 1,500 and 1,000 BC.

Peruvian archaeologists have found an estimated 3,000-year-old mummy near the country’s capital, Lima.

Students and researchers from the University of San Marcos first found the mummy’s hair and head wrapped in a cotton ball. Excavations later revealed the entire mummy.

– It was a stone burial chamber. A person is left behind or sacrificed in the area, the archaeologist Miguel Aguilar says the Reuters news agency.

Archaeologists believe that the body had mummified itself.

The mummy is believed to have belonged to the Manchay civilization, known for its u-shaped temples. The top of the temples pointed towards the sunrise.

The Manchay civilization developed in the Lima valleys in the central parts of the Peruvian coast between 1500 and 1000 BCE.

Archaeologists have also found other artefacts in the grave: corn, coca leaves, seeds, bottle necks. The archaeological site of Huaca La Florida is located in the Rimac Valley near Lima.
