A 12-year-old strategy game jumps from 40 to 40,000 players on Steam in one day

Endless Space was released on Steam 12 years ago, but suddenly it has more players than ever before. MeinMMO tells you what’s behind it.

What kind of game is this? Endless Space is a 4X strategy game where players can choose from one of 8 galaxies and take control of the galaxy. It was released on July 4, 2012 and received a “mostly positive” review on Steam.

However, apart from a few peaks, the number of players remained rather moderate and was mostly in the range of a few hundred to around 2,000 players. On the morning of Tuesday, January 23, 2023 German time, there were just 48 people in the game. During the night, the number shot up to 41,263 concurrent players, the highest Endless Space has ever achieved (via SteamDB).

Endless Space and Endless Legend are from Amplitude Studios, which is celebrating its 13th birthday this year.

More players with a discount than with a free key

What’s going on there? Amplitude Studios, the developers of Endless Space, will celebrate its 13th birthday in 2024. To mark this occasion, many of the studio’s games are currently heavily discounted. This helped another Endless title achieve unprecedented levels of player numbers.

Endless Space is currently 80% off and only costs €1.99 instead of €9.99 on Steam. However, the offer is only valid until 7:00 p.m. on January 25, 2024.

What is interesting is that the strategy game was already available for free in 2019. At that time, however, “only” 31,000 players were registered at the same time – 10,000 fewer than the current discount. And it seems as if the many new players are enjoying the title, as even now there are more than 12,800 people in the game (as of 5:15 p.m., via SteamDB).

The number of players is also skyrocketing elsewhere. Hardly anyone expected the success of the crazy survival game Palworld in this form. The title is inexorably climbing the Steam charts and has already left established titles like Baldur’s Gate 3, Elden Ring and even free2play games like DOTA 2 behind. You can find out which records the game has already broken here.
