Local residents invited to join Janes Walk

For the fifth year in a row, Brantford and Brant County residents will participate in the international citizen-led festival called Jane’s Walk.

This year marks a return to an in-person walk following two years of self-guided tours and videos of walks during the pandemic.

The walk is named after Jane Jacobs, a Canadian recognized as an “urbanist” and community activist. She championed the voice of citizens in matters of urban planning. Jacobs is the author of several books, including the Death and Life of Great American Cities, which takes a critical look at the needs of urban spaces and neighborhoods.

The walk honors Jacobs, who died in 2006, engaging citizens to explore and talk about their neighborhoods, what people need from them and what they might give to them, and what makes them safe, liveable and vibrant.

The walks have been held across the world on the first weekend in May since 2007.

There will be 16 walks in Brantford and Brant, each led by a citizen passionate about their neighbourhood, its history and issues it faces.

All the walks are free and open to everyone.
