At Togothe Dynamics for the Majority of the People (DMP) will not participate in the senatorial elections of February 2, 2024. An indirect vote, during which regional and municipal councilors will elect around forty senators. The other 20 will be appointed by the president Faure Gnassingbé.

The installation of the Senate is one of the last stages of the establishment of the institutions of the Fifth Republic which the DMP still rejects, seven months after the promulgation of the new Constitution. Deputies and senators will elect a president to the honorary role.

A useless and above all budget-consuming additional institution »

Brigitte Kafui Adjamagbo Johnson, MP and coordinator of the opposition platform, explains why the DMP will not present a candidate: “ In the context of the constitutional coup d’état which is still ongoing, the regime wants to organize these elections to establish the institutions of the Fifth Republic. And we cannot under any circumstances associate ourselves with this project which would be another betrayal for the Togolese, who want to elect, even by direct universal suffrage, the President of the Republic. »

She continues: “ We also noted that in anticipation of these elections, the regime had already done everything possible to defraud past elections and reserve a significant number of municipal councils and regional councils for itself. And, in view of the social and economic situation, we think that we want to set up an additional institution which will be useless and above all budget-consuming. »

L’installation of the Senate is one of the last stages in the establishment of the institutions of the Fifth Togolese Republic. Once it is effective, the two houses of Parliament will vote to elect a President of the Republic whose role will only be honorary.

The function of President of the Council, which concentrates most of the powers, will fall to the leader of the majority party in the Assembly. It will therefore be occupied by the current head of state, Faure Gnassingbé, whose Unir party won 108 of the 113 parliamentary seats, according to the official results of the last legislative elections which took place last April.
