There are often auctions. But sales like these? It’s quite rare, especially when it comes to legendary outfits written in the annals! At the end of November, the famous Lebanese businesswoman Mouna Ayoub opened the doors of her large dressing room to present her marvelous collection of iconic clothing.
Everything was signed Jean-Paul Gaultier of course. She has followed the French designer since his beginnings. Her wardrobe therefore includes emblematic pieces created by the enfant terrible of fashion! “Gaultier’s haute couture is a beautiful representation of French design and quality craftsmanship. Her designs are sexy and very wearable. Most of them are museum pieces, so I wanted to share with as many people as possible what Couture represents through my eyes and through the eyes of Maison Gaultier“, she explained in a press release.
Mouna Ayoub has put 41 exceptional pieces on sale. It didn’t take long for prices to skyrocket. The “Courson” faux denim and pearl overalls from the Spring-Summer 2003 collection sold for 71,500 euros. The khaki taffeta bomber jacket and Scottish embroidered trompe-l’oeil kilt from the Fall-Winter 1998-1999 collection at 65,000 euros, as did the evening dress called “Cabaret” from the Spring-Summer 2002 collection.
But the piece that left its mark and was sold for more than 10 times its estimated price was none other than the “L’écume des jours” dress, made of denim and ostrich feathers, from the Spring collection. -Summer 1999. Estimated between 25,000 and 35,000 euros, this exceptional piece was finally sold for 377,000 euros: a world record!
The 41 Jean Paul Gaultier pieces all sold like hot cakes. The auction brought in a total of 930,000 euros!
