Google Calendar on the Web is evolving with a new, more modern interface that finally benefits from a dark mode. At the same time, the publisher is preparing the integration of powerful task management functions.
Google Calendar has continued to evolve since its release fourteen years ago, to now offer simple and complete calendar management adopted by millions of Internet users. A few taps of your finger are enough to create personalized calendars containing professional appointments, family events to attend, birthday dates not to be missed, etc. Better yet, you can easily share them with all your contacts.
But if the service is used daily on smartphones, the Internet giant has not forgotten the Web version. In a blog postGoogle announces a brand new interface for Google Calendar on the Web, which takes advantage of the aesthetic codes of Material Design 3, as well as the highly anticipated addition of dark mode, already present for five years on the Android version. An evolution that follows on from the latest updates made to the interfaces of the Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive applications.
Google Calendar: a modernized interface and a dark mode
The new design of Google Calendar takes advantage of the Material You visual language, launched at the same time as Android 12, which Google is gradually applying to all of its services. The main calendar view is now contained within a rounded-corner frame, with redesigned side and top bars, more readable fonts, and more modern icons. The rendering is much more readable and accessible. Enough to display visual consistency between all the tools.
But the most anticipated element of this update is undoubtedly the introduction of dark mode, a highly anticipated option which is activated from the settings, in the “Appearance” section. It allows you to adapt the diary to a dimly lit environment, in order to ensure better reading comfort and consume less battery. Please note, this update could affect the proper functioning of certain extensions, so Google recommends reporting any problems encountered to the developers of the extensions in question.
This update is currently rolling out and should be available in the coming weeks to all Google Calendar users on the web, whether for personal accounts or Workspace subscribers.
Google Calendar: the upcoming addition of Google Task functions
But Google doesn’t plan to stop there. The Internet giant is testing the integration of new functions intended to strengthen task management directly within this application, a bit like what Google Tasks already offers. Our colleagues atAndroid Authority have discovered, in version 2024.42.0 of the mobile application’s APK, that Agenda users will soon be able to manage subtasks, an option previously reserved for the Tasks application itself. Previously, when a user wanted to add or edit a subtask, Calendar would direct them to the main app.
With this update, Agenda could make it possible to work with tasks at a much deeper level, including editing subtasks. We can also note the appearance of a new interface for managing task lists, like what we are used to with Tasks. What to announce the merger of the two applications?
Finally, Google Calendar introduces an option to turn off event illustrations, which are triggered by keywords in event descriptions, such as “birthday” or “coffee.” While these visual elements add a fun aspect and facilitate quick identification of appointments, they can nevertheless overload the display. Currently in gradual deployment, this feature should be available to everyone in the next updates.
