Borderlands 4 has been officially unveiled. Now we’re left guessing what exactly is in store for us. But at least one thing in the trailer gives us some clues.
This is the trailer: The newly released trailer for Borderlands 4 doesn’t really offer much. It’s just one minute and 19 seconds long and doesn’t show any gameplay.
The trailer left a lot open, but the first theories are already emerging. Logically, with a trailer like this, hunting for initial clues is part of the fun. That’s why fans are already taking the teaser apart frame by frame and looking for clues as to what the game might be about.
Many small details are analyzed, but one point in particular could be a really good clue: a text at the end of the trailer. Let’s take a look at what the trailer could indicate. Warning! From here on there are spoilers for Borderlands 3 and other parts of the series!

What could the Borderlands 4 trailer mean?

What kind of moon is this? The moon that flies through space in the trailer is probably Pandora’s moon Elpis. We remember: The moon Elpis played a role in the Borderlands pre-sequel and turned out to be the key to the large chamber on Pandora in Borderlands 3. The exterminator Lilith had to sacrifice herself in the end to seal Elpis so that he wouldn’t tear the planet Pandora apart.
Nevertheless, the trailer shows that problems still arise, because whatever is causing the asteroid rain cannot be good for Elpis or Pandora.
Otherwise, the trailer also shows a hand reaching for a psycho mask. The theories on social media are already going in all directions, but some suspect that this could be an Eridian hand. In particular, an Eridian from the pre-sequel appears: The “Watcher”.
Why the Watcher? The reason for this lies at the end of the trailer, because in the last seconds various Eridian-looking characters can be seen very briefly.
Here players have already started to find a possible translation:
In several posts, fans have come to the conclusion that the translation could be “He is Watching. Break Free,” which could at least be a reference to the Watcher. So could he play a role in Borderlands 4?
At least the theoretical solution sounds plausible, because the Watcher could hint at an exciting setting for Borderlands 4.
Who is the Watcher? He is a mysterious Eridian who appears briefly in the pre-sequel. The Borderlands Wiki summarizes: The Watcher has the ability to see into the future and warn of dangers. For example, in the pre-sequel, he warned Colonel Zarpedon about Handsome Jack. He also saves Athena from being executed by Lilith.
Above all, the Watcher warns the exterminators of a huge impending war. They should gather as many exterminators as possible for this war. And that would of course be a really exciting setting for the fourth part of Borderlands.
But: Of course, everything is pure speculation so far. It remains to be seen which direction the game will take. However, it is scheduled to be released in 2025 – so we can only hope that further information will not be too long in coming.
