Household waste: these residents pay more than most French people

Household waste these residents pay more than most French people

If you own your home, you must pay a tax to finance garbage collection. A tax whose amount varies from one to two depending on where you live.

Do you know what TEOM is? This is the household waste removal tax, an annex to the property tax, the amount of which is linked to the cadastral rental value of the homes, and not to the quantity of waste actually produced by the household. In certain municipalities, this is the household waste collection fee (REOM) which is indexed to the quantity of garbage. These schemes aim to finance garbage collection and therefore local waste collection services. But depending on the city where you live, this tax is more or less expensive.

Indeed, according to a major survey published on March 19, 2024 and conducted by the consumer service L’UFC-Que Choisir, the cost of waste management varies from one region to another. For several years, the amount of the TEOM has continued to increase, with strong disparities from one territory to another (plus 6% on average per inhabitant between 2020 and 2022, from 118 to 125 euros).

And the territories where we pay the most are not necessarily those where the service is the most efficient. Taxpayers are far from all being in the same boat, with towns in which the per capita tax reaches more than 160 euros, while in other municipalities it only amounts to 65 euros. UFC-Que Choisir has developed a virtual map which allows you to discover the price of household waste management, but also the quantity of waste eliminated in a given municipality.

The survey reveals, for example, that in Brest, the amount of the household waste collection tax only reaches 70 euros per year while the TEOM level reaches 217 euros per inhabitant in Marseille. A look at the interactive map shows that the amount of the tax is 133 euros in Neuilly-sur-Seine (92), 190 euros in Saint-Denis (93), 97 euros in Rennes (29 ), 123 euros in Chambery (73) or even just 61 euros in Brive-la-Gaillarde (19).
