A major rescue effort is underway in Sundbyberg after a fire in a seven-story building.
The alarm came in shortly before 10 p.m. and six fire stations participate in the work.
– We have taken some people out with our high-altitude vehicles, others have evacuated themselves, says Josefin Lindblom, management operator at the rescue service.
The emergency services were initially unable to find the fire and a stairwell was filled with smoke. Residents began to be evacuated while trying to locate the fire.
– We focus on getting people out of the entire building, says Christian Lennkvist.
The police also participated in the work and have set up cordons in the area.
– We are assisting the emergency services, among other things by arranging a room where the evacuated people can be collected, says Daniel Wikdahl, press spokesperson at the police.
Several people to hospital
At 11 p.m., the emergency services announced that they had succeeded in extinguishing the fire.
– It was a seven-storey building that caught fire and the fire was on the first floor, now we are ventilating the building, says Josefin Lindblom, line operator at the rescue service.
Several people have been injured in connection with the fire and several resources from the medical service were sent to the scene.
– There are many ambulances on site, so far five people have been taken to hospital, but there will most likely be more, says Ola Åström, team leader at SOS Alarm.
According to the rescue service, more than that have been injured in connection with the fire.
– What we have received is that 15 people are being looked over by the healthcare system, I don’t know the extent of their injuries, says Josefin Lindblom.
The emergency services do not want to comment on exactly what burned.
