These Bundesliga stars are available for TOTY
Before we get to the list, we would like to point out again that leaks are not an absolute guarantee. As of now, we cannot say with complete certainty whether all players will actually appear in the end.
Goalkeeper+Defense:
Gregor Kobel (TW) – Borussia Dortmund: The Dortmund player was undoubtedly one of the outstanding players in 2023. BVB was able to win many games, especially thanks to the strong support of the Swiss. In the Bundesliga he kept his box clean 11 times, made an average of 3 saves and conceded an average of just one goal per game.
Alejandro Grimaldo (LV) – Bayer Leverkusen: One of the best, if not the best, free transfer of last summer. The left winger, who is strong in shooting and playing, has already collected 12 scorer points (7 goals, 5 assists) in 16 games this season. Grimaldo also impressed with strong performances in the second half of the 22/23 season, back then for Benfica.
Min Jae Kim (IV) – FC Bayern Munich: The South Korean only played a great season with Naples and quickly became Bayern’s defense boss this season. Most of the time “the monster” seems calm. He can often compensate for minor positioning errors thanks to his enormous speed.
Mats Hummels (IV) – Borussia Dortmund: Few people would have expected Mats Hummels to have such consistency at an international level. In the season so far, Hummels has once again become head of defense and shines as ever with strong positional play, well-timed tackles and clever build-up play.
Jeremie Frimpong (RV) – Bayer Leverkusen: The lightning-fast right winger is a very invigorating element, especially for the offensive. Frimpong was able to shine with several goals and assists this and last season. Under coach Xabi Alonso, the Dutchman is also becoming more and more stable defensively.
Midfield:
Granit Xhaka (ZDM) – Bayer Leverkusen: Xhaka is the thinker and leader in midfield and, above all, can bring his experience perfectly into the game. He is also not above doing the “dirty work” for his colleagues and is one of the aggressive leaders in the control center. Based on his already strong season with Arsenal FC last season, he is rightly a candidate for the TOTY.
Joshua Kimmich (ZM) – FC Bayern: In what was actually a messed up last Bayern season, Kimmich and Jamal Musiala were the only real constants in his team. Even if Kimmich is criticized here and there, he is a guarantee for Munich’s success with his clever passes and unconditional will to win.
Jamal Musiala (ZM) – FC Bayern: The German dribbling artist is the promise for the future in the German national team, and even now a man for the important moments at FC Bayern. Even if he can’t always perform consistently, he’s always good for an outstanding performance even on an average day. It combines unique technology with enormous speed.
Julian Brandt (ZM) – Borussia Dortmund: After leaving Bellingham, Julian Brandt has become the sole offensive strategist and the link between defense and attack. The Dortmund player played a large part in Dortmund’s comeback, especially in the second half of last season, with several goals and assists, which was almost enough to win the championship. In what has been an average season for BVB so far, the German is one of the better players.
Vincenzo Grifo (LM) – SC Freiburg: The standard danger personified. Be it precise crosses, tough penalties or irresistible, directly converted free kick goals, Grifo has it all in his repertoire. He has been the constant for the Breisgauer team for years and has also earned election to TOTY due to his really strong second half of the season.
Jonas Hofmann (RM) – Bayer Leverkusen: “Mister Reliable” almost always knows how to convince. The versatile midfielder shines on the field with his high level of game intelligence, moves skillfully into dangerous spaces and can set up his colleagues with precise passes when he is not looking for the finish himself. Hofmann is also one of the top performers in his new home of Leverkusen.
Leroy Sané (RM) – FC Bayern: While the coaching change from Nagelsmann to Tuchel was viewed critically by quite a few experts in Germany, a very clear winner of the change has emerged since this season at the latest. In the first half of the season you could see perhaps the best Sané there has ever been. The German international delivered fast dribbling, dangerous shots and a feel for the right pass at the right time on the assembly line. In 15 games, Sané has already contributed 16 points (8 goals, 8 assists).
Florian Wirtz (ZOM) – Bayer Leverkusen: After serious injuries, many footballers need a long warm-up time to get back to their old performance level. Florian Wirtz doesn’t seem to know this rule. On the contrary: Since returning from his cruciate ligament tear, Wirtz has been playing better than ever and is the difference player on offense (12 scorer points).
attack
Loïs Openda (ST) – RB Leipzig: Anyone who thought that the step from Ligue 1 to a top team in the Bundesliga was too big was proved wrong by the extremely fast Belgian. Together with new acquisition Xavi Simons, Openda shines on the offensive at Leipzig and has already scored double figures in the Bundesliga and added more goals.
Serhou Guirassy (ST) – VfB Stuttgart: The meteoric rise of the Guirassy did not go unnoticed by EA Sports. “Goalrassy” scored in almost every Bundesliga game until he was injured, sometimes even several times. With 17 goals scored, he is currently only behind Harry Kane in the top scorers list.
Harry Kane (ST) – FC Bayern: Some doubted that Kane could confirm his goalscoring rate outside of the Premier League. After 16 games he has proven it to all critics and is leading the top scorers list in the Bundesliga with one. Kane has already scored 21 goals and prepared 5 more in 15 games. Even in the first half of the year in a weak Tottenham team, he was the outstanding man and scored many goals.
Honorable mentions from the Bundesliga:
Below we have listed the players who could have been chosen but, according to leaks, did not make it onto the nomination list:
Matthijs de Ligt (IV) – FC Bayern: For a long time last season, de Ligt was the outstanding man in defense, if not on the pitch in general. He was even able to help his colleagues win games with one or two goals. Unfortunately, the Dutchman has been struggling with injuries for some time and has therefore not been able to show much of his strong form from last season this season.
Xavi Simons (ZOM) – RB Leipzig: The Dutch counterpart to Musiala. Simons made his breakthrough last season at PSV from Eindhoven. He is continuing his strong performances in his new home Leipzig and is one of the shooting stars of the season so far. Why he shouldn’t even be selected for the TOTY can only be attributed to the oversupply in the midfield.
Exequiel Palacios (ZM) – Bayer Leverkusen: Already in the second half of last season, Palalcios was able to impress in important games with his incredible passing strength and aggressiveness. This season he is one of the best midfielders in the Bundesliga. If he continues to perform like this, he should be eligible for TOTY next year at the latest.
Niclas Füllkrug (ST) – Borussia Dortmund: The top scorer from last Bundesliga season has a bit of a problem this season, which is not least due to Dortmund’s overall mixed performance. Unfortunately, Füllkrug wasn’t able to really impress in 2023 and will be left out of the TOTY selection.
This brings us to the end of the Bundesliga leaks for the TOTY election. We are interested in your opinion. Which of the players do you think is unfairly chosen? Which player is missing from the list? Feel free to write it to us in the comments.
