Finland will organize the Frisbee Golf World Championships in 2025. Previously, the competitions have always been played in North America.
The sport’s umbrella organization PDGA has granted the Frisbee Golf World Championships to be played in Tampere and Nokia in July 2025.
At the same time, Finland is making history, as the sport’s most significant competitions will be held for the first time outside of North America, where the World Championships have been played since 1982. The number of participants in the competitions is planned to be around 300 players from more than 30 countries.
According to the announcement of the competition organizers, the event brings all the world’s best players to Finland and gathers approximately 25,000 spectators, and the regional economic significance of the competition for Pirkanmaa is estimated to be 3–4 million euros.
– Bringing the Frisbee Golf World Championships to Finland has been my goal for more than ten years. Having the world’s most prestigious frisbee golf event in Tampere and Nokia is proof of the work we have done for the sport over the years, said the director of the competition event Jussi Meresmaa.
Frisbeegolf has grown at a tremendous pace in Finland over the past few years, and the sport has hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts in Finland. At the same time, the growth of competitive frisbee golf has been rapid.
The 2025 World Cup will be played on two courses: Nokia’s “The Beast” course known from the European Open and the “Disc Golf Center” course established in Tampere in 2018.
Finnish champion Väinö Mäkelä was naturally happy with PDGA’s decision.
– I have high expectations that this will be a real spectacle, Mäkelä rejoiced For Frisbeegolfmedia.
The tracks in Tampere and Nokia will be playable for the last time in their current form at the World Championships, as Nokia is planning a swimming hall and Tampere a trolley and apartments in the areas of the frisbee golf courses. “The Beast” is one of the most prestigious courses in the sport, where the European Open has been played since 2011.
– This is a bit like the last dance, Mäkelä grumbled.
Mäkelä sees the World Cup as a prize, but also as a place on the screen for Finns.
– Finland is a really small country compared to the United States. We are still trusted so much that we get to organize the World Cup. I’m proud of what the entire frisbee golf community has done for this.
