At the hearing held at the Thai Criminal Court in the capital Bangkok, it was ruled that two posts quoted by opposition MP Srinork on social media in 2021 were subject to the crime of treason against the king, known as “Lese Majeste”, and cyber crimes. As a result of the hearing, Srinork was sentenced to 6 years in prison without suspension. Srinork, who came to the courtroom with MFP leader Chaithawat Tulathon and other party members before the hearing, was sent to prison after the hearing.
Member of Parliament sentenced to 6 years in prison for “betrayal of the king”: The reason stunned
Rukchanok Srinork, a 29-year-old member of parliament from the main opposition Forward Movement Party in Thailand, was sentenced to 6 years in prison on the grounds of “treason against the king” and cyber crime. The content of the cybercrime stunned those who heard about it.
It is stated that the two posts cited by Srinork on the X social media platform, formerly known as Twitter, contain anti-monarchy statements.
MEMBERSHIP MAY BE REMOVED
In the statement made by Thailand Human Rights Lawyers, it was announced that the decision was “unlawful” and that an application for bail would be made on Srinork’s behalf.
If the court does not accept the bail request, Srinork’s membership in parliament is expected to be revoked within 24 hours.
In the general elections held in Thailand in May this year, MVP, which also included Srinork, came first in the ballot box.
However, the party’s prime ministerial candidate, Pita Limjaroenrat, could not be elected prime minister because she did not have enough votes of confidence from the royal senate members.
