For the first time in ten years, Christmas sales are believed to be declining this year. In total, Swedes are estimated to spend three percent less than last year, and then end up at the same level as in 2021.
It is worst for the consumer durables trade, which is believed to be back by five percent.
At the same time, there are many people who still take the opportunity to shop when the price is lower.
– We can see that one in 20 Swedes will buy all their Christmas presents on Black Friday. And two-thirds will buy some of them then, says Patrik Müller, e-commerce expert at Nets.
Up for the grocery stores
Nor do the Swedes seem to skimp when it comes to food.
In the grocery trade, i.e. grocery stores for example, it is instead believed that sales will increase by one percent.
– Many people will have to tighten their belts. At the same time, it must be remembered that Christmas and New Year’s celebrations are a strong tradition in Sweden, so many will probably prioritize it, says Arturo Arques, private economist at Swedbank.
