Gunde Svan knows a thing or two about how to become a successful skier.
Something he believes Alvar Myhlback and Edvin Anger can become, on one condition.
– Then it will be really good, Gunde tells Sportbibeln.
Gunde Swan is one of Sweden’s, and the world’s, foremost skiers of all time. Raised in Dalarna, he then went to ski high school in Torsby, and won the junior WC as a 17-year-old. The debut in a senior WC came three years later, and after that the titles and medals came as if on a conveyor belt.

After his skiing career, which he ended at only 29 years old, Gunde was for a couple of years the leader of the national team. He was also involved in both the Swedish and international ski federations, assignments which he later left.
With all that experience in his luggage, Gunde Svan is if anyone qualified to comment on today’s skiing talents. Which he has done too.

Alvar Myhlback is the 17-year-old cross-country skier, also from Dalarna, who has had a major breakthrough. Earlier this year, the then 16-year-old Myhlback received a dispensation to ride the Vasaloppet, whose age limit is usually 19. He finished in a very impressive eighth place. During the summer, he followed up the sensation by impressing on roller skis.
Pays tribute to Anger
Gunde has a lot of faith in the 17-year-old.
– He can be as good as he wants if everything is correct and works. But it’s a little unrealistic that it should be able to continue at the rate he’s been doing right now. But it will definitely continue, and I think he also understands that it will not be possible to develop as extreme every year as he did last year. He is too healthy for that, and insightful, says the skiing legend to Sportbibeln.

Gunde believes the same applies to another young, Swedish skiing talent.
– Edwin Anger is also ‘incoming man’ to the highest degree. And he has the size for that, and can oxygenate that whole hut, that whole body. Then a big engine is required, and he has already proven that he has that. If he gets a few more years on him too, it will be really good.
How good do you think Anger can be?
– He can absolutely become one of the best.
