Three thousand places compared to 1,500 today in detention centers, promises the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, in an interview with At Parisian this Sunday. Among the cities concerned: Aix-en-Provence, Béziers, Dijon, Nantes, Nice but also overseas, with Mayotte and its most active detention center in France which will also see its capacity increase by around a hundred places .
This announcement by the Minister of the Interior comes a month before the Senate’s examination of immigration bill. A text in which the government also plans to regularize undocumented workers in so-called “shortage” professions, a measure to which the Republicans, although essential to vote on the text in the hemicycle, are fiercely opposed.
“ It is a very important text, assured Gérald Darmanin about the bill. We must stop delaying its adoption. Today, if 2,500 foreign delinquents have been deported since January 1 on my instructions, there are 4,000 whom I cannot deport because the law prevents me from doing so. »
With this new announcement of the doubling of places in detention centers, some see it as a political maneuver to convince the Republicans of the government’s firmness on immigration. Gérald Darmanin also assures that regularizations will not create a draft and will be done on a case-by-case basis.
