Homeless people in Nyköping are offered an apartment – with no sobriety requirement

Since 2021, Stadsmissionen has had a similar collaboration with Eskilstuna municipality, which is said to have been successful.

– There are several who testify to the difference and security it is to have a place that is one’s home, says Helena Kalaitzis Barrögård, social manager at Sörmland’s city mission.

For the municipality of Nyköping, the project will cost 1.7 million in the start-up and seven apartments will be offered to needy Nyköping residents during the spring.

Requirements for the housing contract

In the housing model, there are two requirements that the homeless must meet in order to keep their apartment.

– The first is that the person must take care of their home according to the Tenancy Act and the second requirement is that the person must accept the help that is offered, says Anniola Nilsson (M), chairman of the social welfare committee.

Started in the US

The Bostad model first began as an initiative from a psychologist in the US who wanted to do something about homelessness in New York. It has since spread and in Sweden there are roughly 20 municipalities that apply the method.

“It’s not about bypassing the housing queue”. Hear about how Bostad first should work in the video above.
