Tagesspiegel In the aftermath of the Kahovka dam explosion bodies

Ukrainian social media accounts have published pictures of skulls found at the bottom of the Dnieper, one of which has a rusted helmet.

The remains of Nazi German soldiers may have been revealed from the bottom of the Dnieper after the explosion of the Kahovka dam, writes the Tagesspiegel magazine.

Photos of three skulls in the sand have been posted on Ukrainian social media accounts. One has a rusted military helmet.

The breaking of the dam caused the water of the river to flood a large area in Kherson, and at the same time, the bottom of the Dnieper was exposed in places.

The German War Graves Commission tells Tagesspiegel that it may indeed be the remains of Wehrmacht soldiers.

Commission representatives based in Ukraine will try to investigate the matter when it is possible. This time it won’t be possible because of the war and the flood disaster. The commission will also investigate whether the armed forces of Nazi Germany had cemeteries in the area where the Kahovka reservoir was built in the late 1950s.

Nazi Germany and Soviet forces fought fierce battles on the Dnieper in August–December 1943. According to the commission, the remains of 154 German soldiers have been found in the area since 2017.
