It was in 2009 that the plans for the Barents Center multi-arena were presented by businessman Mikael Fahlander. The idea was that it would become a landmark in Haparanda.
And so it was. But in the form of a water-filled pit. This after the entire project crashed in 2017.
Now Haparanda municipality wants to buy back the land that was sold to the project 14 years ago. The cost to the municipality is SEK 3.6 million.
– This finally gives us opportunities to develop the area. Now we are moving forward with planning and will start looking at what opportunities exist, says Nina Waara (S), municipal councillor.
