Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc had pole position after eventful qualifying. The Monegasque also got off to a good start when he managed to hold off the Red Bull cars that started second and third.
But Leclerc’s lead would not last very long on the city track in the Azeri capital.
Reigning world champion and World Championship leader Max Verstappen had moved up to second place early on and started breathing down Leclerc’s neck.
On the third lap he was passed. On the long straight, the Ferrari had no chance as the flying Dutchman gassed past with the wing up and the DRS engaged.
Three laps later, Leclerc was down to third place when Sergio Pérez was also easily able to get past.
The fight for victory was instead between the two Red Bull drivers. Sergio Pérez had the faster car of the day and was able to cross the finish line relatively unchallenged first of all.
It was the Mexican, who also won Saturday’s sprint, second grand prix victory of the season after also winning in Saudi Arabia in March.
Charles Leclerc was third, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso fourth and Leclerc’s teammate Carlos Sainz fifth.
