If you find yourself in the green section of a grocery store, there are a lot of goodies to be found. For some time now, the low-price chain Willys has taken a further step regarding the green in order not to let fruit and vegetables go to waste.
This week, the discount chain published on its Facebook page that thanks to its boxes of “half-baked but full-flavored” fruits and vegetables, it was able to save over 1,000 tons of fruit and vegetables.
This has been prevented by placing foodstuffs with a short expiration date or things that would otherwise have been thrown away.
They further write that they have also managed to prevent bread wastage by around 600 tonnes in the past year.
Customers see red – and green
On Willy’s Facebook page, several people write that they appreciate the discount chain’s “green initiative”. While others point out that the boxes are rarely found in stores or that in fact they have never seen them.
“Too bad you don’t do the same with other products. Where does all the meat and dairy products go when the date has passed?”.
“Not wise, has 1000 tons of fruit and vegetables been thrown away before? Who sleeps well?”.
“I understand the idea, but at the same time you raise the prices of so much else? Double standards”.
First come, first served on Willys green options
Willys responds to several comments and believes that the boxes are very popular and can therefore run out quickly in stores:
“All our stores are working with our waste-smart offers, so feel free to ask the staff in your store next time you’re there, and they can show you where they are (or should be if they’ve run out)”.
