Residents evacuated during Sarnia apartment fire

A fire prompted first responders to evacuate two floors of an apartment building in Sarnia’s High Park neighborhood Sunday night.

City firefighters and police helped with the evacuation of the Earlscourt Drive apartment complex.

The residents, police said, were temporarily being sheltered on Sarnia Transit buses. There were no reports of serious injury, police said.

Joann Smout, the building’s property manager, confirmed Monday there were no serious injuries.

Firefighters had cleared the scene, she said, but didn’t provide a cause for the blaze.

She said she hopes most of the evacuated tenants will be able to return to their units on Tuesday but noted that a couple of units are beyond immediate repair.

Another tenant at the building said one person received oxygen in an ambulance at the scene but was released.

Another person was reportedly taken to hospital for smoke inhalation but later released, the tenant added.
