In a statement made by the Estonian Ministry of Defense, it was stated that the USA will deploy infantry units to the country.
In the statement, it was stated that the US-made HIMARS rocket system and the equipment related to this system will also be deployed to Estonia.
Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said that this decision marks a significant increase in the alternating military presence of the United States in Estonia and the Baltic states.
NATO STRENGTHENS THE EASTERN WING
Pevkur stated that the decision demonstrates the long-standing commitment of the United States to the security of the region and strengthens NATO’s presence.
The U.S. infantry unit usually has 80 to 250 soldiers.
At a time when the Ukraine-Russia War is raging, the announced deployment to Estonia, a NATO member and Russia’s neighbor, is thought to aim to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank.
Estonian defense officials announced on December 3 that they would purchase the HIMARS rocket system from the USA with a 200 million dollar deal.
FIRST DELIVERY IN 2024
Officials stated that the agreement would provide training as well as ammunition and equipment.
Noting that the agreement is the largest arms procurement project, officials said that it would also increase Estonia’s defense capacity.
Weapons manufacturer Lockheed Martin is expected to make the first deliveries in 2024. (AA)
