7 years of pointless waiting: Marvel star buries superhero dream so as not to get in James Gunn’s way

7 years of pointless waiting Marvel star buries superhero dream

Contract killer is simply not a profession with a future. At least that applies to the DC assassin Deathstroke, who Joe Manganiello (Spider-Man) embodied in Justice League. The exciting and complex character should make further appearances in cinema films. But seven years after the film’s release, DC boss James Gunn dealt the character the final screen death blow.

DC boss James Gunn talks Marvel friend out of the supervillain role

Manganiello revealed to Comic Book:

James [Gunn] is my buddy. We talked about the topic because I was supposed to design a comic for DC executive Jim Lee based on my script for the Deathstroke movie. But no one could assure me that I would be on board if [die Comic-Reihe] ends up getting the attention of directors and producers. So I had to let the idea go. James Gunn just told me, ‘Let her go.’

Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke

With this, Manganiello will probably have to say goodbye to his Deathstroke role for good. He was in Justice League Seen in a post-credits scene in 2017, in which Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) tries to persuade him to set up a contra force to join the Justice League. A few years later, he was able to shine in additional scenes thanks to Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Since then, he was supposed to appear in Ben Affleck’s Batman film, which never materialized. Then he wrote the script for a Deathstroke film, which was also canceled by the restructuring of the DC Universe. A comic adaptation seems like a consolation prize in comparison, and his friend James Gunn even talks him out of that.

Deathstroke offers a lot of potential for a DC movie. The character, whose real name is Slade Wilson, initially worked as an elite soldier in the US Army and became an unscrupulous mercenary after coming into contact with a super serum. Deathstroke is considered the deadliest assassin in the DC Universe and, in addition to various comics, can also be seen in the Arrow and Titans series, among others.
