60 seconds: The police murders in Malexander

On 28 May 1999, the Östgöta Enskilda Bank in Kisa was robbed by Tony Olsson, Andreas Axelsson and Jackie Arklöv. During the hunt for the bank robbers, the policemen Olle Borén, 42, and Robert Karlström, 30, were shot to death at close range with their own service weapons. In the video you get a summary of the case.

The Malexander murders changed Sweden, the Swedish police and the way the Swedish Probation Service grants furloughs.

  • The police murders made clear the need for both a functioning radio communication and a uniform tactic for police officers throughout the country – Olle Borén and Robert Karlström did not know that the robbers stopped the getaway car twice to shoot at one of their colleagues.
  • Nowadays, communication centers send out important information directly and all police officers are trained in basic tactics where, among other things, they are prepared on how to deal with serious violence and how to think before possible interventions.
  • Even the correctional system changed after it emerged that Tony Olsson had been granted 65 furloughs over a five-month period to participate in a theater project. In 1999, the Correctional Service granted 53,000 furloughs. Two years later, 29,000 leaves were granted.
