Even before kick-off in Milan’s final Serie A round against Hellas Verona, Zlatan Ibrahimovic was hailed by the supporters with both tifo and songs.
After the final whistle, a more official farewell followed – and then Ibrahimovic also gave a speech in which he thanked the supporters and the club for everything.
And then came the already famous words:
“The time has come to say goodbye to football, but not to you,” he said.
Whether that means Ibrahimovic’s career is actually over is still uncertain. It has been clear for some time that there will be no continuation in Milan.
— I want to thank the club, the managers and from the bottom of my heart also the fans. I have felt at home and will be a Milan supporter for the rest of my life, Ibrahimovic said.
According to several media reports from Italy, Ibrahimovic will hold a press conference later on Sunday night.
Midfielder Monza is said to have offered Ibrahimovic a contract proposal for the coming season.
