Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he wants Ukraine to be invited to NATO in connection with the defense alliance’s upcoming summit in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius on July 11-12.
– We need a very clear and clear signal at the summit in Vilnius that Ukraine can become a full member of NATO after the war, he says at a press conference in Kiev.
– Such an invitation to the alliance is a first and very practical step, and would be very important for us.
Ukraine has previously announced interest in joining NATO.
Earlier on Saturday, Zelenskyy and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who is visiting Kiev, announced in a joint statement that Spain would propose the establishment of a special NATO-Ukraine council.
