Donald Trump has given conflicting statements about continued support for Ukraine should he be re-elected as president.
– Of course we understand all the risks, says Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has said he will cut aid to Ukraine. He has also said that he could end the war in 24 hours – and that he will continue to support the country. During a press conference outside Reykjavik, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi was asked how he sees Donald Trump becoming president again.
– I have not heard that Trump said that he will stop supporting Ukraine if he becomes president, says Zelensky.
– But he talks a lot.
The press conference was held together with the Nordic prime ministers on Monday in connection with the Nordic Council of Ministers, which is ongoing during the week.
The US has currently given the most support to Ukraine in pure monetary value. Zelenskyj points out that it is not only the president who decides the issue, but to an equal extent how the distribution will be between Republicans and Democrats in Congress.
– The biggest risk is if the USA’s direction will change.
He does not believe that Donald Trump will give up Ukraine because it was seen as a loss.
– Not supporting Ukraine, I think, will be a big win for Vladimir Putin and a big loss for the West, for unity, democracy and freedom, says Zelensky.
– I don’t think that Trump, if he becomes president, wants to lose.
The presidential election in the United States is held on Tuesday, November 5. The Republicans’ Donald Trump has a slight advantage over the Democrats’ Kamala Harris in the latest opinion polls.
